Over the past few months, Carlsbad residents may have undoubtedly seen a lot of construction that has been going on around Pine Avenue. The Coast News Group reported that all of that is completed and that as of May 19th, 2018, Mayor Matt Hall as well as the rest of the City Council christened the new Pine Avenue Community Center and Community Garden, and opened it to the public. There were hundreds of citizens in attendance at the event, waiting to get a first look at the newly completed building. The project has been going on for a few years, and with the $11 million budget, they have created a two-story community center. Some of the features are a gym, a climbing wall, and an area that specially caters to teenagers that was built upstairs and includes amenities like video game consoles and computer labs. A new garden was created outside the building with raised garden beds and diverse plant varieties to enhance the aesthetics of the facility. The new 18,000 square foot building also has a strong commitment to a green future, and was built with LED lights, includes amenities for electric car charging, and also uses solar power to take care of 1/3rd of the building’s annual electricity needs. Residents are optimistic about the new center and say that kids will now have an opportunity to engage in physical activities in a safe environment and that the center will function as a hub for the community where neighbors can forge relationships.
