Carlsbad residents can celebrate one of their own soon by visiting the William D. Cannon Art Gallery located at 1775 Dove Lane in downtown Carlsbad. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that illustrator Janell Cannon’s and her artwork that launched a children’s best seller will be celebrated at the “Stellaluna” exhibit from July 1st until August 19th. The exhibit will be open from 11 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 pm to 5 pm, on Sundays. The exhibit contains all the original artwork of graphic designer and author, Cannon’s book, “Stellaluna”, a tale about a mother bat and her lost baby bat named Stellaluna. The book that has sold millions of copies and was first published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, is now being reissued in a 25th anniversary hardbound edition by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt come August 7th. Janell Cannon hails from Carlsbad and worked for the city for over 12 years before leaving to pursue her own projects. Cannon will be at the exhibit every Friday from 1 pm to 3 pm painting, and visitors will be given the opportunity to observe her at work and have a chat with her. Cannon is thrilled with the prospect of connecting with her hometown and her community, as well as celebrating a book that changed her life’s direction. Cannon commented, “To be able to have that book continue on is a miracle.”
